School Free from Hate

Overview

I developed the landing page “School Free from Hate” for Porvir through Sintropika to address the rise of extremism in Brazil, which has led to an increasing wave of attacks on schools, leaving a trail of fear, insecurity, and trauma. The page provides guidance, experiences, and resources to combat hate and curb the spread of misinformation, helping educators tackle situations of violence and hate narratives in schools.

Inspired by the expressive work of Jean-Michel Basquiat, I created a visual concept reminiscent of a school chalkboard, using typography that mimics chalk writing to capture the authenticity of the educational environment. I used artificial intelligence to generate initial illustrations, which were then refined in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop to represent feelings of hate, racism, and other forms of intolerance. I integrated interactive elements with JavaScript and CSS, allowing teachers to explore cards and click on specific situations to access a curated selection of tools, experiences, and references that can be used in schools. My goal with this project was to convey the message of combating hate clearly and impactfully, contributing to a more positive and welcoming school environment.

Process

Developing the Concept

Creating the landing page “School Free from Hate” for Porvir was a project deeply inspired by the expressive work of Jean-Michel Basquiat. The goal was to develop a visual concept that resonated with the educational environment, hence the choice of a school chalkboard theme with chalk-like typography. This design choice aimed to capture the authenticity and seriousness of the issue while engaging visitors in a creative and impactful way. Given the delicate nature of the subject, I aimed to depict the feelings of hate, racism, and intolerance through illustrations. These illustrations were initially generated using artificial intelligence and then refined in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. The intention was to represent these emotions in a raw and realistic manner, promoting reflection and engagement from the visitors. The entire page was developed using Elementor, a no-code tool, ensuring the design was both dynamic and accessible.

Challenges

One of the main challenges was seamlessly integrating interactive elements with JavaScript and CSS to create an engaging user experience. Ensuring that the visual elements and interactive components worked harmoniously required careful planning and execution. Additionally, the need to accurately represent complex emotions such as hate and racism through illustrations demanded a delicate balance between artistic expression and sensitivity. Another challenge was curating a comprehensive set of resources, experiences, and references that educators could use in their schools to effectively combat hate and misinformation. This involved extensive research and thoughtful selection to provide valuable and practical tools for teachers.
